How to convert cm to inches

cm to inches formula
inches = cm ÷ 2.54 (1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm), or equivalently inches = cm × 0.393701.
Example: 76 cm ÷ 2.54 = 29.92 in — a size-30 waist. To get feet, divide the inches by 12: the whole number is feet and the remainder is inches. 170 cm = 66.93 in = 5 ft 6.93 in.
Height in feet and inches
In the US and UK, height is said in feet and inches — "5 foot 9" — usually rounded to the nearest inch, so 175 cm (5′ 8.9″) is "5 foot 9". The chart above covers 150–199 cm. Going the other way, 6 feet is 182.9 cm and 5′ 4″ (the average US woman) is about 162.6 cm.
Waist and clothing sizes
Jeans sizes like 30 or 32 are the waist in inches. Brands often run 1–2 inches larger than the label ("vanity sizing"), so when buying online check the brand's measurement chart and compare with a tape measure on your own waist or a pair of pants that fits.
Fractional inches
US tape measures mark inches in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. The fractional result rounds to the nearest 1/8 inch (about 3 mm), which is how most people read a tape. Example: 10 cm = 3.94 in ≈ 3 7/8 in.
A4 vs. US Letter
US Letter paper (8.5 × 11 in = 21.59 × 27.94 cm) is about 6 mm wider and 1.8 cm shorter than A4 (21 × 29.7 cm), which is why documents shift when printed on the other size.
Mental math
cm × 0.4 runs slightly high (the exact factor is 0.3937). For better accuracy, divide by 2.5 and subtract 2%: 76 cm → 30.4 − 0.6 = 29.8 in (exact: 29.9).
Clothing sizes vary by brand and country. Shoe sizes (US 9, EU 42 and so on) use separate sizing systems, not a straight length conversion.
