⌨️ Typing Speed Test (WPM)
Type the sentence shown above exactly as written. Finish the last punctuation mark (or press Enter) to move to the next one. Five sentences make a round.
| Speed | |
| Accuracy | |
| Typing time | |

How to take the typing speed test
- Type the sentence shown above into the box. The clock starts the moment you press your first key.
- Correct characters turn green; mistakes get a red wavy underline. You can fix them with Backspace.
- Type through the final punctuation mark (or press Enter) to move on to the next sentence.
- After 5 sentences you get your WPM and accuracy. A round only counts toward your best WPM if accuracy is 90% or higher.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM (words per minute) uses the standard definition of a "word" as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. That way long and short words are treated fairly.
WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ typing time in minutes
Only characters that match the original count toward your speed, so this is closer to "net" WPM than raw keystrokes. Time spent between sentences is not counted. For example, typing 225 correct characters in 1 minute 30 seconds gives (225 ÷ 5) ÷ 1.5 = 30 WPM.
Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the original. Characters you skip by pressing Enter early count as errors.
Typing speed benchmarks
| WPM | What it typically means |
|---|---|
| Under 30 | Beginner or hunt-and-peck typing |
| 30–45 | Around the commonly cited average for adults |
| 45–65 | Above average; comfortable for most office work |
| 65–90 | Fast; common among experienced touch typists |
| 90+ | Very fast; competitive typists go well beyond 120 |
These ranges are rough guides, not official standards. Speeds on short sentences tend to run a little higher than on long passages.
How to type faster
- Keep your index fingers on the bumps of the F and J keys (the home row) and return there after every reach.
- Accuracy first. Fixing mistakes costs more time than you think; as accuracy improves, speed follows.
- Practice touch typing without looking at the keyboard, 10 minutes a day, every day.
- Drill your problem spots: numbers, punctuation, capital letters with Shift, and common letter pairs like "th," "ing," and "ion."
Typing tests count speed differently (gross vs. net WPM, how errors are handled), so your number may differ from other sites. The text you type is never sent anywhere.
