How to use the tip calculator

  1. Choose a currency and enter the bill before tip. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; others tip on the total including sales tax. Either is fine — enter whichever amount you want to tip on.
  2. Tap a tip percentage or type your own, then enter how many people are splitting.
  3. If each share comes out to something awkward like $38.47, choose a round-up step. You will see how much gets collected and how much is left over (which usually becomes extra tip).

Tip formulas

Mental math shortcuts

10%: move the decimal one place left ($86.40 → $8.64). 20%: double that ($17.28). 15%: 10% plus half of it ($8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96). 18%: take 20% and subtract one-fifth of 10% ($17.28 − $1.73 = $15.55). 22%: 20% plus 2%.

How much to tip in the US (common practice)

Tipping in the US is customary rather than legally required, and expectations vary by city and venue. These are the ranges most etiquette guides quote:

ServiceTypical tip
Sit-down restaurant15–20% of the pre-tax bill; 20%+ for great service or large groups
Bartender$1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab
Food delivery10–20%, at least a few dollars; more in bad weather
Takeout / counter serviceOptional; 0–10% is common
Hair stylist, barber, nails15–20%
Taxi / rideshare10–20%
Hotel housekeeping$2–5 per night

Before tipping, check the receipt for "gratuity included" or a service charge — restaurants often add 18–20% automatically for parties of six or more. Card terminals that suggest 18/20/25% sometimes calculate on the after-tax total, which nudges the tip up slightly.

Tipping abroad

RegionRestaurant norm (general)
CanadaSimilar to the US, 15–20%
UK and most of EuropeService is often included; otherwise around 10% or round up
Japan, South KoreaTipping is generally not expected; some places add a service charge
Southeast Asia tourist areasNot required, small tips appreciated; check if service charge is included

Tip percentages are custom, not law, and the descriptions above are general guidance — local practice varies. This calculator does not convert currencies.

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?
Etiquette guides usually say pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is common and only adds a little. Enter whichever amount you prefer in the bill field.
Is 18% a good tip?
Yes. In the US, 15% is considered the minimum for adequate sit-down service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 22–25% is generous.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal one place to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill: 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.
How do I split a bill with a tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does both, and can round each share up so nobody has to deal with cents.
Do I tip if a service charge is already on the bill?
A service charge or "gratuity included" line usually replaces the tip, so an extra tip is optional. Some people leave a few dollars more for exceptional service.
