How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
Enter a temperature in °F and the °C value appears instantly, with the working, the Kelvin value and a mental-math estimate. Use it when a US weather app says 70 °F, a recipe says "bake at 350 °F", or a thermometer is set to Fahrenheit.
Fahrenheit to Celsius formula
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8
Subtract 32 first to line up the freezing points, then divide by 1.8 because 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees equal one Celsius degree. The order matters — dividing before subtracting gives the wrong answer. Example: 350 °F → 350 − 32 = 318 → 318 ÷ 1.8 = 176.7 °C.
Reading a US weather forecast
Memorize a few anchors: 32 °F = 0 °C (freezing), 50 °F = 10 °C, 68 °F = 20 °C, 86 °F = 30 °C. Every 18 °F is 10 °C. So "highs in the 80s" means roughly 27–32 °C, and "lows in the 30s" means around −1 to 4 °C.
Oven temperatures
US recipes use 25 °F steps, which turn into awkward numbers like 176.7 °C. Home ovens are set in 5 or 10 °C steps, so pick the nearest: 350 °F → 180 °C, 400 °F → 200 °C, 425 °F → 220 °C. Ovens vary, so check doneness a little early the first time.
Fridge and freezer
The USDA recommends keeping a refrigerator at 40 °F (4.4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (−17.8 °C). Bacteria grow fastest in the "danger zone" between 40 °F and 140 °F (4–60 °C).
Body temperature
98.6 °F = 37.0 °C, and the commonly used fever threshold of 100.4 °F = 38.0 °C. If your thermometer shows numbers in the high 90s, it is in Fahrenheit mode; most can be switched by holding a button.
Mental math
Subtract 30, then halve. 70 °F → 20 °C (exact 21.1), 50 °F → 10 °C (exact 10). For oven temperatures the error grows (350 °F → 160 °C vs. exact 176.7), so use the formula.
