💣 Minesweeper
Each number shows how many mines touch that cell. Your first click is always safe. Right-click (or long-press on mobile) to place a flag.
How to play Minesweeper
- Click any cell to start. Your first click and the 8 cells around it never contain a mine, so you always open a nice clearing.
- A number on an open cell tells you how many mines are in the 8 surrounding cells.
- Mark cells you know are mines with a flag: right-click on desktop, or long-press (or switch to 🚩 Flag mode) on mobile.
- Click a number that already has that many flags around it to open all its other neighbors at once. This is called chording.
- Reveal every cell that is not a mine to win. Your time is saved as the best time for that difficulty.
Difficulty levels
| Level | Board | Mines | Mine density |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 9×9 (81 cells) | 10 | ≈ 12.3% |
| Intermediate | 16×16 (256 cells) | 40 | ≈ 15.6% |
| Expert | 30×16 (480 cells) | 99 | ≈ 20.6% |
These are the same sizes as classic Windows Minesweeper. On narrow phone screens, Expert is rotated to a tall 16×30 board with the same number of cells and mines.
Minesweeper patterns every player should know
The 1-1 pattern
When two 1s sit side by side along a wall, the first 1's mine must be in the two cells it shares with the second 1, so the third cell next to the second 1 is safe.
The 1-2-1 pattern
Along a wall (or an opened edge), 1-2-1 means the cells above both 1s are mines and the cell above the 2 is safe. It is the most common guaranteed pattern in the game.
The 1-2-2-1 pattern
With 1-2-2-1, the cells above the two 2s are mines and the cells above the outer 1s are safe.
Tips for faster times
- You do not have to flag every mine. "No-flag" play, where you only click guaranteed-safe cells, is often faster.
- Chording needs flags, though. Near big open areas, flag and chord to cut your click count sharply.
- When logic runs out, compare the remaining mine count with the remaining cells and guess the cell that is least likely to be a mine and most likely to reveal new information.
