How the daily brain workout works

  1. Press Start today's workout and five games play one after another. Each takes about a minute, about 5 minutes in all.
  2. Before each game, simple instructions appear in large print. Read them and press Start. If a game feels too hard, it is fine to press Skip this game.
  3. At the end you see today's score (the average of the game scores), results for each game, a bar chart of the last 7 days, and your daily streak.
  4. To practice just one game, choose it under Practice a single game on the first screen. Practice adjusts difficulty but does not count toward today's score.

You can use a mouse, touch, or the keyboard (Tab, Enter, and number keys). There is no sound, and by default there is no time limit, so take your time. If you want a speed challenge, turn on Timed mode (10 seconds per question) on the first screen.

🎨 Color WordsAttentionPick the ink color, not what the word says (a Stroop task)3 → 4 colors, more mismatched words
🔢 Sequence MemoryWorking memoryTap the squares in the order the ★ appearedStarting length 3 → 6, slightly faster playback
➕ Quick MathArithmeticEnter the answer to addition and subtraction problemsSingle-digit addition → two-digit addition and subtraction
🛒 Grocery ListMemoryMemorize a shopping list, then pick only the items that were on it3 → 7 items

Difficulty adjusts itself

Each game has its own level from 1 to 5. Score 80 or higher and the next session is one level harder; score under 50 and it gets one level easier. After a few days, each game settles at a level that is "a little challenging but doable." Levels are saved in this browser.

Do brain games prevent dementia? An honest answer

Mentally stimulating activities and staying socially active are widely recommended as healthy habits for the brain. However, there is no medical evidence that this game prevents or treats dementia. People who practice these tasks quickly get better at the tasks themselves, but studies disagree on how much that carries over to everyday memory. Think of this as a fun daily habit, not a test or a treatment.

If you or a loved one have started repeating the same questions, getting lost on familiar routes, or often forgetting appointments or where things are, do not rely on a game score. Talk to a doctor, who can arrange a proper memory assessment. Organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association (US) also offer information and support. Checking early leaves more options open.

If you enjoy memorizing numbers, try the Number Memory Test as well.

FAQ

Can brain games prevent dementia?
There is no medical evidence that they do. Mentally and socially active lifestyles are recommended for brain health, but no specific game has been shown to prevent or treat dementia. If memory changes worry you, talk to a doctor about a memory assessment.
How long should I play each day?
One daily workout (about 5 minutes) is plenty. Short, regular sessions at the same time each day build a habit better than long ones. Spend the extra time on a walk or a chat with family.
Are these brain games good for seniors?
They were designed with older adults in mind: large text and buttons, no time pressure by default, plain instructions before every game, and difficulty that adjusts automatically so it never gets frustrating.
The text or buttons look too small.
On a phone, pinch with two fingers to zoom, or increase the text size in your browser settings. On a computer, press Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and + to zoom in. A tablet or larger screen is the most comfortable.
My score changes every day. Is something wrong?
No. Scores normally rise and fall with mood, sleep, and difficulty changes. When you do well, the game gets harder, so your score may dip for a while. This is not a diagnostic tool, so do not worry about a single day.
Where are my records saved? Can I see them on another phone?
Only in this browser's cookies (the last 30 days of scores and each game's level). Nothing is sent to a server, so other devices or browsers will not see them. Use the same device and browser to keep your streak going.
